LSVT Big

Innovative Programs for Parkinson’s Patients

Are you or someone you love living with Parkinson’s disease? This progressive neurological disorder causes a range of symptoms affecting your overall movement and mobility. LSVT BIG is a comprehensive program that helps train you to move better. Backed by more than two decades of clinical research, this program improves amplitude (movement size), helping patients counteract the bradykinesia and rigidity common in Parkinson’s disease. It’s been proven to enhance gait, balance, and overall functional mobility in early to mid-stages of the condition.

LSVT BIG grew out of another evidence-based program, LSVT LOUD, designed to help Parkinson’s patients improve their speaking ability. BIG uses the same principles as LOUD, focusing on recalibrating the brain’s perception of movement size. The goal is to help patients maintain their ability to move freely and independently for as long as possible. At Teton Therapy, our certified therapists tailor each program to fit your needs.

If you’re ready to improve your movement and quality of life, request an appointment with our clinic in Riverton, WY, Lander, WY or Cheyenne, WY today.

How Parkinson’s Affects Movement

Parkinson’s disease develops gradually and affects each individual differently, but it typically progresses through five stages:

  • In Stage 1, patients may notice tremors and subtle changes in posture or walking that don’t usually disrupt daily activities.
  • By Stage 2, symptoms such as muscle rigidity and smaller movements become more noticeable.
  • In Stage 3, motor symptoms worsen, and a shuffling gait or balance issues may appear, increasing the risk of falls.
  • Stage 4 includes fully developed motor impairments that often require a mobility aid for safety.
  • By Stage 5, patients may experience significant rigidity and require full-time care due to severely restricted movement.

One of the benefits of LSVT BIG in Riverton, WY, Lander, WY and Cheyenne, WY is that it can be helpful at any stage of Parkinson’s, although it’s most effective in stages 1 through 3. Beginning the program early gives you the greatest opportunity to retain your independence and manage your symptoms with greater control. Our approach emphasizes consistency, repetition, and task-specific training to slow symptom progression and support your long-term mobility goals.

What’s Involved with LSVT BIG

LSVT BIG stands for “Lee Silverman Voice Treatment – BIG,” a name that reflects the program’s central idea: thinking big to move better. Through intensive practice, patients are trained to recognize what large, purposeful movements feel like—and how to carry that into everyday activities. A typical program includes 16 sessions over four weeks, paired with daily home exercises and functional movement training designed around tasks like rising from a chair, walking across the room, or reaching for household items.

The therapy is designed to improve both gross motor skills, such as walking and balance, and fine motor skills, including hand and finger movements. As you gain awareness of your movement patterns, your brain learns to recalibrate how it perceives effort and movement size. Research shows that this process helps promote neuroplasticity, which is key to slowing progression in Parkinson’s and retaining functional abilities. With guidance from our skilled team, you’ll gain confidence and control in your movements, supporting a more active and independent life.
